ShieldHer Initiative Launches Free Breast Cancer Outreach in Bariga

The ShieldHer Initiative launched a free breast cancer awareness outreach in Ayetuntun Community, Bariga, Lagos, on Thursday, July 10, 2025, to promote early detection and provide free health services to residents.

The outreach, themed “Early Detection Saves Lives,”  featured clinical breast examinations by trained professionals, blood pressure and sugar checks, BMI assessments, and referrals for free mammograms for women aged 40 and above or those with suspicious lumps. Both men and women in the community benefited from the general health checks.

Founder of the initiative, Udo Wisdom, said the turnout exceeded expectations and confirmed that follow-up plans were in place to ensure participants receive continued support and diagnostic services where needed. He also appreciated the sponsors, volunteers, and team members for their contributions to the event’s success.

Community stakeholders, including Chief Monsuru Onifade and the headmistress of the host venue, Mrs. Oke R.A., commended the initiative. While Onifade praised the organisers for creating awareness about early detection, Mrs. Oke noted that the program coincided with her birthday and urged better sensitisation to increase future participation.

The ShieldHer Initiative aims to bridge gaps in breast cancer awareness and access to care, especially in underserved communities. According to the World Health Organisation, early detection significantly improves survival rates, which remain lower in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria.
