By Kolawole Ahmed

The Faculty of Science, University of Lagos (UNILAG), emerged as the winners of the annual inter-faculty volleyball tournament held at the Sports Centre from Tuesday, July 15, to Saturday, July 19.

The event, themed “UNILAG Titans: Battle for Supremacy,” featured volleyball teams from various faculties at UNILAG. The teams were divided into two pools. Group A included the faculties of Sciences, Law, Social Sciences, and Arts, while Group B consisted of Education, Management Sciences, Engineering, and Environmental Sciences.

In the group stages, Science dominated Group A with a perfect run, finishing with 9 points, while Education topped Group B with 8 points. Semi-final matches held on July 18 saw Science defeat Management Sciences, and Education edge past Social Sciences, to set the stage for the final.

The final showdown on July 19 saw the Faculty of Science outclass Education with a commanding 3-0 win to emerge as champions. Earlier that day, Social Sciences defeated Management Sciences to secure third place.

Several players stood out during the tournament, including Saheed, the school team captain representing the Faculty of Science. He was supported by teammates including Feyi, Silas, and Lawson.

Commenting on the performances of the finalists, Ekob Godswill, a player from the Faculty of Social Sciences, said “Playing against Science, especially since most of them are in the school team, was quite bittersweet. We tried our best, but they were just too good. They had more experience and dominated with their service, their receipt, and their attacks. Education was tough too, and a lot of their players are also in the school team.”

One of the tournament’s memorable highlights was the participation of Dr. Daramola, a lecturer from the Department of Geography, who played for the Faculty of Social Sciences.
