Adeoye Oluwatimileyin Emerges Winner of PRASA

Adeoye Oluwatimileyin, a 200-level full-time student in the Department of Mass Communication, has emerged as the winner of the Professor Ralph Akinfeleye Scholar Award (PRASA) competition, receiving a cash prize of ₦150,000.

The quiz competition, organised by the Mass Communication Students’ Association (MCSA) and executed by its Academic Committee, is the first of its kind in the Department of Mass Communication, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, University of Lagos.

The four finalists, Oluwatimileyin Adeoye, Ilyas Balogun, Joseph Faluyi, and Victor Chijioke, advanced through five rigorous stages, beginning with a pool of 41 participants. They progressed through the Round of 25, the Round of 16, the Quarter-finals, and the Semi-finals before reaching the Grand Finale. Each stage tested their knowledge of communication, intellectual ability, and academic excellence.

The final contest between Adeoye and Balogun featured four intense rounds, with each contestant answering four questions per round. Adeoye clinched victory by winning three of the four rounds, earning him the title of PRASA champion.

Speaking with UNILAG Sun, Adeoye expressed his gratitude: “I appreciate God Almighty for this victory. I also want to thank my brothers, friends, and classmates for their support.”

The competition was held in honour of Professor Ralph Akinfeleye, a distinguished Nigerian professor of Journalism and Mass Communication. In his remarks, Professor Akinfeleye commended the initiative, describing it as a milestone that reflects the department’s growth. The Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ridwanullahi Abdulganiyu, representing the DSA, also attended the event.

The keynote speaker, Nancy Duffour, founder of HER Foundation, captivated the audience with a reading from chapter thirteen of her book, I Got This: I Am Her, sparking meaningful conversations among students. “You don’t have to be perfect to be powerful,” she emphasised. Nancy Duffour and John Momoh, Chairman of Channels Television, were key sponsors of the event.

In his closing remarks, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Oloruntola Sunday, thanked the students and all attendees. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote student development and advance the faculty’s vision.
