UNILAG Professor Reveals Hidden Dangers of Lagos Air Pollution

A Professor of Environmental Geochemistry at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Abiodun Odukoya has revealed the hidden dangers of air pollution on Lagos residents, amid the declining air quality in the city, due to increase in traffic congestion, industrial activities, and poor waste management.

She made this revelation at Nurudeen Alao Hall, Distance Learning Institute (DLI), UNILAG on July 23rd, 2025, during the 18th inaugural lecture for the 2024/2025 academic session.

Prof. Odukoya highlighted that in a recent study and according to researchers, the alarming levels of air quality in Lagos is declining, due to increasing traffic congestion, industrial activities, and poor waste management.

The study noted that the concentration of pollutants in the air exceeded recommended limits, posing serious health risks to residents. Notably, nitrogen dioxide and other pollutants were found to be high in areas of heavy traffic and industrial activities.

“The air pollution in Lagos is a ticking time bomb. We are seeing increased cases of respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease, and other health issues that are directly linked to poor air quality,” she said.

Prof. Odukoya explained further that the study’s findings are concerning, especially given the city’s growing population and rapid urbanization. With over 21 million people living in Lagos, and the city’s pollution problem is a major public health concern.

She further called for urgent action to address the issue, including implementing stricter emissions standards, promoting cleaner energy, and improving waste management practices.

Speaking on the theme of the lecture, “Doctor of Rocks: Unveiling the Hidden Connections Between Geology and Human Health,” Prof. Odukoya emphasized the need for a better understanding of geological materials and their impacts on the environment and public health, stating that “to protect public health, we must first understand the rocks beneath our feet” as it is important for understanding the link between geology and health, for improving health outcomes and protecting the environment.

Prof. Odukoya also noted the importance of maintaining element balance in the environment for a better human health and ecosystems.

According to Prof. Odukoya, deficiencies or excesses of essential elements can have far-reaching impacts, from causing health problems to damaging the environment.

“Iodine deficiency disorder affects millions of people worldwide, particularly in developing countries. Similarly, excessive levels of toxic elements can lead to cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other serious health issues.

“Maintaining element balance is crucial for sustaining healthy ecosystems, promoting agricultural productivity, and protecting human health,” she advised.

“By understanding the importance of element balance and taking steps to promote it, we can mitigate the risks associated with element imbalances and work towards a healthier and more sustainable future,” Prof. Odukoya urged.

Prof. Odukoya’s lecture highlighted the critical link between geology and human health. By understanding the chemistry of the environment and addressing issues like toxic elements, water contamination, and environmental degradation, it will be much easier to share the health and social identity of the world. This shows that geologists play a vital role in improving health outcomes, and their work can inform policies and practices that promote environmental sustainability and public health.
